Downs After School Club
The After School, Breakfast and Holiday clubs take place in the school canteen at Downs Junior School.
The After School club is open every day that Downs Junior is open. It is open from the end of the school day until 6pm.
The school canteen is newly built and is an excellent location for our club. The canteen has lots of space for indoor play, and we also have use of the large playground outside. We are also able to use the adventure playground.
Getting Children to the Club
.Junior children make their own way to the canteen where they are signed in.
Pick Up from Downs Infants
Infant children are collected directly from their class and walked to the club by our team. We have a ratio of one adult to 5 children for this walk and the children wear reflective jackets.

Meet The Team
Charlie is the supervisor at Downs and has been working for Class of Their Own since September 2012. Charlie loves all aspects of running the afterschool club and loves being able to create a fun, safe and inviting space for the children to play in.
Charlie is originally from Bristol where she first started Playwork in 2004 and worked in an afterschool club in Bristol for 8 years before she moved to Brighton. Charlie enjoyed all aspects of her previous role but felt like she needed a change of scenery, and what better place to move to than beside the sea.
Charlie is currently working towards her Level 5 in Early years and also holds an NVQ level 3 & level 2 in Playwork and is a qualified paediatric first aider. She has also completed other short relevant childcare courses such as food hygiene, dealing with challenging behaviour and child protection. At club Charlie enjoys cooking with the children, face painting and getting creative.
In her spare time Charlie enjoys spending time with her friends and family, sewing, car booting, yoga and cooking.
Andy is the Assistant Supervisor at the club and has an NVQ level 2 & 3 in Playwork. He is a self-employed artist and has a degree in sculpture and a masters degree in contemporary fine art with art therapy. He has lots of experience of working with children as a Teaching Assistant. He has worked closely with children with additional needs and has had SEN training. Andy is also a dyslexia mentor with training from the British Dyslexia Association. Andy has had first aid training and also runs crafts workshops for children.
Andy was our ‘Inclusion Worker of the Year’ 2013.
Kim is a Playworker at the Club and has NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Playwork. She has been a Playworker for over 8 years now at different settings and prior to this she was a Careworker.
Hannah is a Playworker and works every day at the after school club. She has been with Class Of Their Own for nearly 5 years, the whole entirety of which she had been based at this club and has an NVQ Level 2 in Playwork. Hannah also works as a Midday Supervisory Assistant for Downs Junior School. Hannah is a talented tennis player and she was once a Sussex County Squad Member. Her other faculties include football; she played for Brighton & Hove Albion Girls - and poetry. Hannah is a very enthusiastic poet and her ambition is to one day publish a book, her first volume of poems!
Rachel is a Playworker at the club and has worked with young people and adults in various different settings before choosing to specialise in working with children in 2010. Rachel previously worked as a Teaching Assistant before joining Class Of Their Own and holds a degree in media studies as well as being a qualified hypnotherapist.
Over the last couple of years Rachel has had training in Child Protection, Food Hygiene and Managing Challenging Behaviour. She has recently completed her NVQ Level 2 in Playwork and is now studying the Level 3. In her spare time Rachel enjoys drawing and adventures in her campervan!
Christine has worked with children for most of her career and her work experience has included working with babies to teenagers in youth clubs. Since arriving in Brighton 9 years ago Christine has worked in Nurseries and After School Clubs within the local area. Her particular interests are activities which encourage the children to explore their creative side (making things) and activities which help the children to work in teams through physical challenges such as team sport. Christine has an NVQ Level 2 in Playwork.
Sandy has been working for Class of Their Own since July 2011 and during that time has gained her Level 2 NVQ in Playwork and as well as being a Playworker she works for us as an inclusion Playworker supporting children who need more intensive support on a 1-2-1 basis. Sandy also works as a babysitter for us and has had lots of experience working with children in school settings having a Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification. Whilst studying for that qualification Sandy realised that she would not be fulfilled as a Teaching Assistant so set her sights higher and she is currently studying for her Degree at The University of Brighton which will qualify her as a Primary School Teacher and plans to teach Reception or Year 1 children. Sandy enjoys working for us as she likes being around children in the fun easy going atmosphere of a play setting which is very different to being a Teacher.
Her main interests centre around creativity and she particularly enjoys playing with glitter and fluffy things like feathers and faux fur. Sandy loves being asked to support children with a creative activity as she really enjoys helping children to develop their creative side.
