Hello, I’m Sam, the Founder of Class Of Their Own. I’m also the Director responsible for everything that happens within the clubs.
I first had the idea for Class Of Their Own while I was sitting on a beach in India. I’d been a primary school teacher for a few years and I wanted to start something new. With my parents running their own business, the entrepreneurial spirit was in my blood!
When I got home, I started a tutoring agency and a few months later, after reading how children fall back over the holidays, I decided to start a holiday club. I gathered some teacher friends together and started our first club at Middle Street School in Brighton. Initially, it was just me, a friend and four children having fun and learning through play. Jump forward to today, and we have 170 staff members who look after 3,500 children! I want every child to love coming to our clubs and I love it when I hear of children disappointed that it isn’t an after school club day or not wanting to leave at the end of a session. This is lovely for us and also for our parents to hear – all we want is a happy, contented child!
In the early years, I looked after every aspect of the business – marketing, bookings, all administration, recruiting, managing staff, planning, purchasing equipment, working in the clubs on a daily basis, and lots more. I was the epitome of a Jack-of-all-trades, running the business from my bedroom with a big old computer and a dial up internet connection. Now we have an office team of 14, each experts in their fields, and a much faster internet connection!
In 2005, as the business grew, I called on my eldest sister Tanya to help with the marketing, administration and finance side of things. It was the best decision I ever made and I asked her to be a joint business partner. I’m often asked what it’s like to work with your sibling, with people saying they couldn’t possibly do it. But it works really well for us (although we obviously have our moments!!). We’ve grown up with the same strong values and they show up throughout the business, along with our shared commitment to make Class Of Their Own the best it can be. Working with Tanya enabled me to take two years maternity leave, which I was very lucky to have and am so grateful for!
The birth of our daughter enabled me to see Class of their Own with new eyes. Although I’d always thought hard about what parents want, I clearly know what I want as a mum. I want her to be settled, happy, all her needs met – the basics of food and drink but also her emotional needs, someone aware if she is having a wobble, supporting and encouraging where needed, the team playing and having a laugh with her – really knowing her. Having the opportunity to do things that she does at home, and also the opportunity to try things we aren’t able to, or don’t do so often, at home – large group games and challenges, getting creative making slime and other messy crafts!
Outside of work, I live in Hove with my family and Cockapoo dog Pepper, who often comes in to the office – she’s playful so is a good company fit!! We enjoy everything Brighton has to offer – the beach, walking, kayaking and paddle boarding, the many child-friendly events, and spending time with family and friends. My travelling is becoming more adventurous again now that our daughter is a bit older – I would love to take her to India and to the beach where Class Of Their Own was first dreamt up – full circle!
